General Introduction to Camagüey Province, Cuba

The province of Camagüey, one of the best zones of Cuba, is one of the largest provinces and its capital with the same name Camagüey, is the fourth largest city of Cuba with over 300 thousand inhabitants.

Along the north shore of the province, there are good beaches, but they can also be found on the south. The Camagüey's panorama is uniformly flat, broken sometimes by palm trees, its land is quite fertile and particularly good for sugar cane.

The province also has one of the most important ports of Cuba, Puerto Nuevitas, responsible to transporting sevaral thousands of tons of sugar to the thirteen main sugar mills of Cuba.

Camagüey Beaches

The beach ofSanta Lucía is located in the north and it's probably the greatest tourist attraction of the province. This beach is amazing and diving is just perfect. But Camagüey also has several other beaches to be pride, among them Cayo Romano, that is now in preservation state of wild life and finally Cayo Sabinal, very close to Santa Lucía.

The area nicknamed Jardines de la Reina is a stretch of 100 miles of small isles, an ideal site also for diving and fishing activities.

City of Camagüey

Camagüey City was one of the most important of Cuba during the colonial era; today, it keeps some places of interest such as the baroque churches and a few picturesque sites. There are also good restored squares such as Plaza de San Juan de Dios.

Visiting the city involves unavoidably the the life consideration of the local hero, Ignacio Agramonte (famous mambí insurgents general who made a failed war against the Spaniards in the middle of the 19th century). To honour his memory, a park and a museum have been dedicated. The city itself is among the most beautiful ones of Cuba, full of precious testimonials of colonial past.

Near the train station it's possible to find the Museum of Ignacio Agramonte's Birth. You must also visit La Merced Chirch to admire its frescod and other admirable objects kept in the crypt; anyway, the best of this city is precisely the Plaza San Juan de Dios made with bright shades, interesting buildings and a yellow church.
